In the name of Allah Most Gracious Merciful

Fasting – a concept that often perplexes both the non-Muslim and Muslim community. The notion of abstaining from food and water may seem fickle and confusing to those who don’t fully comprehend its meaning.

But fasting is much more than a superficial body cleanse. It is a purification for the soul – the essence that defines all of us. Fasting is meant to cleanse the higher self and rid us not only of food and drink but also of the spiritual vices that plague our being.

But what exactly are these spiritual vices? They are the negative influences that circulate throughout our being – from the physical to the metaphysical and the spiritual. Something as simple as language, and tone – a control which we all surprisingly bypass throughout most of our lives. Fasting may not be easy, but with discomfort comes ease, as the Quran tells us.

Through the act of fasting, we are tested, and our appetite is withheld. This leads to the benefits of fasting being seen in the repair and rejuvenation of our bodily functions.

However, the spiritual benefits of fasting are just as important. It is a time for reflection, prayer, and contemplation, which ultimately leads to a stronger connection with oneself and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

In conclusion, fasting is not just about abstaining from food and drink. It is a spiritual journey that purifies the soul and helps us rid ourselves of negative influences. It is a time for growth, not necessarily linear but growth, nonetheless. Reflection is truly present here, and ultimately a stronger connection with our higher selves is something I hope we all found this ramadhan.
